Why is insulation important in a house?

Comfort in a home is essential on a day-to-day basis, and one of the key elements for it to be so is thermal insulation. In the case of Spain, practically 50% of the houses built are more than 30 years old, so most of the housing stock in Spain was built without following energy efficiency regulations. This is a major deficiency for many homes. That is to say, a very important energy deficiency. This deficiency generally leads to higher than optimal energy consumption in many cases, with the consequent economic expense and environmental deterioration.

How can we rectify this situation?

By installing SATE systems, we can remedy a large part of the problem. These systems contribute very significantly to the use, in favour of energy saving, of the thermal inertia of the enclosures and, with this, to the levelling of the possible thermal oscillations that the dwelling may suffer, both due to internal and external factors. By levelling out these oscillations, we will not only be able to reduce the excessive energy costs of keeping the home air-conditioned, but we will also contribute to the indirect maintenance of the home. By reducing the constant variations in temperature, we will reduce possible problems associated with them, such as possible cracks due to the expansion and contraction movements of its different elements.

Definition and concept of an ETICS

According to ANFAPA (Asociación de Fabricantes de Morteros y SATE), the SATE (Exterior Thermal Insulation System) consists of a prefabricated insulating panel which is attached to a wall or enclosure and is usually fixed by gluing or gluing and mechanical fixing. This panel acts as insulation, which is protected by a coating consisting of one or more layers of mortar. One of these layers must contain a mesh as reinforcement (Image 1).

Thermal bridges

For dwellings, the envelope is one of the key pillars in terms of insulation, as it is the element that contains all the rooms. But it is not a continuous element due to the presence of openings generated by doors, windows, floors, pillars, etc. These points are precisely the weakest against the possibility of the appearance of thermal bridges.

Thermal fluctuations

Thermal differences in dwellings are, over time, one of the main causes of the appearance of cracks and fissures in the envelope of the dwelling. These appear due to the contractions and expansions that the materials undergo as a result of these variations. The incorporation of an element that improves the insulation of the envelope can help to prevent or reduce this effect.

Panel quîckplâck

Basis of the quîckplâck construction system as well as the quîckSATE exterior insulation system The quîckplâck panels are composed of a base plate of quîckfôam (Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), coated and reinforced on both sides. This reinforcement is carried out by incorporating a first layer of base mortar (quîckmortar, a high-performance flexible mortar) with a high-strength fibreglass mesh (quîckfiber), finishing the assembly with a second layer of the same special mortar (quîckmortar).

This mortar - mesh - mortar composition, as well as its extraordinary adhesion to the polystyrene base, give the quîckplâck panel its high mechanical performance.

What is quîckSATE

It is an innovative system that improves the characteristics of traditional sate as, due to the use of support profiles and our large format quîckplâck panel, it significantly reduces execution times and costs, without altering in any way the advantages of comfort offered by the External Thermal Insulation System (ETIS).

The quîckSATE system basically consists of the installation of our large format quîckplâck panels on the outside of the façade, supported by a specific arrangement of metal profiles fixed to the façade. The quîckplâck panel is fixed to this profile structure by means of mechanical and chemical fastening.

quîckSATE system and its advantages over the traditional ETICS system

As presented above, many of the different elements that make up a traditional ETICS are comprised in the single element that is the quîckplâck panel itself. Starting with the core of the panel, the EPS core that makes up the panel will be the insulating element used by the system. As for the reinforcement layer with mesh, which in the traditional system is resolved ‘in situ’, i.e. on site, in the quîckSATE system, the panel leaves the factory with this reinforcement layer and mesh incorporated, with the guarantee that the inclusion of this layer and mesh will be guaranteed by the fact that the panel will be installed in the same way as in the traditional system.
The quîckSATE system, the panel leaves the factory with this layer and reinforcement mesh incorporated, with the guarantee that this inclusion is carried out in the factory, in an environment and construction process that is controlled in all its aspects. This process is replaced by a simple joint treatment, usual in the quîckplâck construction system. We cannot forget the consequent savings in labour and time that this entails. On the other hand, the quîckSATE system, as a novelty, incorporates an air chamber, encapsulated and watertight between the panel and final exterior finish and the base work or wall to be protected. This chamber, as specified in the CTE, provides an added thermal resistance of 0.17 m2K/w. This is because the system is mechanically fastened by means of profiles previously fixed to the base wall.
In this way, we achieve several advantages in the process:

  1. We are not directly dependent on the degree of deterioration of the existing floor covering.

  2. Possible problems with the flatness of the subfloor can be solved very effectively with the appropriate levelling of the aforementioned interposition profiles.

  3. As the paneling comes with the reinforcement layer incorporated, the need for a deep renovation of the pre-existing covering is unnecessary, as well as the usual pre-gluing and inclusion of the mesh, we can assure that the savings in installation time and labour are more than significant.

quicksate-quickplack.png

Logically, the main properties provided by the SATE systems are preserved.

-Reduction of thermal bridges: With the quîckplâck system, thermal bridges are completely eliminated. Due to its characteristics and installation process, with the corresponding joint treatments, a continuous thermal envelope is achieved.

-Reduction of thermal oscillations: quîckplâck panels have a thermal conductivity λ = W/m K ≤ 0.042 (100mm thick panel). This means that the temperature inside the system will always be stable, minimising the possible contractions and expansions of the dwelling and reducing the risk of cracks appearing as a result.

FITTING OF PROFILES

Once the profiles have been laid out, they shall be fixed to the existing enclosure, using suitable screws according to its characteristics.

Fixing is carried out chemically and mechanically by applying quîckmortar adhesive mortar for panel - profile interposition and subsequent screwing every 40cm along the profile line.

JOINT TREATMENT

The joint treatment, common in the quîckplâck construction system, must be meticulous and is carried out by means of 10 cm wide quîckfîber strips, along the entire length of the joint, fixed with quîckmortar adhesive mortar. In this way a secure yet flexible joint is achieved, providing uniformity across the entire outer skin of the system.

We apply a fireproof, expanding polyurethane foam to seal the upper and lower limits of our SATE system, as well as any openings to the outside that may remain uncovered in the air chamber.

Once the hole has been set out on the panel, we will proceed to open it. To do this we can use a hand saw or a chainsaw. We cut the panel and remove the excess piece. Later we will repair, by means of joint treatment, the exposed edges after cutting.
